This time round I had the opportunity to check out the Seiko SARG011, a recent 6R15 JDM model from the Mechanical line. This watch has a black dial with large Arabic numerals, legible wide hands and red-tipped second hand. Some people think of it as Seiko’s version of the Explorer 1 but I see it as something like the new Tudor Ranger because of its size and its printed hour numerals and bars
Here’s a quick look.

I rarely feature ladies’ watches here as most of the readers here are guys. This is really a “once in a blue moon” post and the watch being featured here is none other than the Orient “Once in a Blue Moon” (model# DB0A009D) from the ladies’ Fashionable Automatic collection.
Blue moon is the second full moon in a single calendar month. The moon repeats its lunar cycle in roughly 29.5 days and hence a blue moon can only be seen in every two to three years. It is a rare mystical phenomenon and legend has it that seeing a blue moon will bring good luck and fortune.
This watch is therefore designed with the hope of bringing good luck to its owner.

Added the Seiko SARG007 to my collection recently. This model has a similar case design as the Seiko AlpinistS except it is 40mm in diameter and has more areas with brushed finishings on its case. The Alpinist was meant to be an explorer watch whereas this model has a dial that makes it look more like a military field watch.
Here are some pictures of the SARG007. I have posted about the SARG005 in December 2013. Remember to check out the link at the bottom of this post if you want to see pictures of that variant.

Here is the latest model in the Orient 3-Star automatic series. The 3-Star automatic is an entry level model and due to the large number of models and variants, you are unlikely to see the full catalog on the Internet. Traditionally, they range from 34mm to 38mm in diameter (except for the vintage Crystal models). The latest models however are much larger. This particular model measures 43mm across excluding crown.

If you follow orient-watch.com, you will notice a new Orient Classic Automatic model being announced on 28th March. In this post, I will share with you pictures of the silver dial variant, ES00003W.
This model has a date window above the 6 o’clock marker and a day sub-dial at the 3 o’clock position. The movement comes with quickset date only. To set the day, you need to turn the hour hand back and forth between 12.00 and 1.00 until the indicator hand is pointing to the desired day.
Here are some photos of the ES00003W.

I posted the black military style Seiko Kinetic (SMY143P) in my previous blog entry. The 5M83 kinetic movement has a power reserve of approximately six months when fully charged. I believe you can consider it a grab and go watch since it will most likely have enough power reserve to last through the unused period.
This watch works well with different straps. It comes with a two-piece nylon strap but will also look good on rubber/silicon, leather and nato straps.
Here are some picture of the green dial variant – SMY141P.

Besides Spring Drive, solar and mechanical watches, kinetic watches are also one of Seiko’s clean energy watches. In a Kinetic watch, electricity is stored in a self-recharging battery that does not need frequent replacement like the conventional battery in quartz watches.
This time round, I had the opportunity to handle a Seiko military style watch, SMY143P that is powered by the newer 5M83 Kinetic movement. Seiko releases military style watches with their Kinetic movement from time to time and this model is one of their latest.
Here is a quick photo review.
