Seiko Alpinist – SPB155J1, SPB157J1 and SPB159J1

This time round I had the opportunity to handle the new Seiko Alpinist from the Seiko Prospex Land sub-brand. Unlike the previous models, this model has been reduced to 38mm diameter and does not have the inner compass bezel and crown. It is powered by the 6R35 movement that has 70 hours of power reserve.

Below are my opinions on this watch.

Size – 38mm is pretty ideal for a watch that is positioned as a classic style explorer watch.

Dial – would be better if it comes in solid dial colour rather than gradient. Traditional colours like Matte black, off white and military green would be ideal. I also like the sandpaper texture on the dial and the fact that the hour markers are printed instead of applied.

Crown – screw-in crown is an excellent feature as the watch has a water resistance rating of 20 bar.

Case – nice classic case design but I wonder why there’s no hard coating applied given that it is from the Prospex Land series where hard coating is appropriate. Some Presage dress watches that are supposed to be worn under the sleeve have got hard coating applied instead (Sharp Edged Series and SJE models).

Date Window – omitting the date window would make the dial more pleasing to look at.

Here are some pictures of the watches.

  1. Very nice pics of great pieces of machinery… I may fall for the SPB159J1, but that’s just because I can’t afford the three of them 🙂
Any idea on the difference between the SPB159J1 and SBDC119 model numbers? Is that just a market thing?
