This time round I had the opportunity to handle another 4R57 based Seiko Presage model. This model was released earlier than the cocktail model and comes in two variants – SSA337J (grey dial) and SSA339J (black dial).
I would say this model has a pilot styled design with the 3,6,9 and 12 numerals reminding me of the Sinn 556 and Oris Big Crown. The 4R57 movement has a power reserve indicator and a date sub-dial at 6 o’clock. This is the first non dress watch model that uses the 4R57 movement. I think it works well on this particular dial design and it shows that the 4R57 movement is quite a versatile movement. It is mostly used in dress watches but I think it can also be used in other watch types such as pilot styled, military inspired and even racing styled watches.
Below are the dial shots of the two variants.
The SSA337J has a silver dial with black hour markers. The applied Seiko logo appears to be black instead of the usual silver coloured. The other stuff on the dial are also printed in black. Lume material is applied to the hour and minute hands, the tip of the second hand as well as the lume dot next to the 3,6,9 and 12 hour markers.
The SSA339J has black dial and the hour markers and printing on the dial are off white, giving it the “aged dial” effect. The second hand and outline of the hour and minute hands also have the same off white colour. The applied Seiko logo is silver coloured and again, lume material is applied to the hour and minute hands, the tip of the second hand as well as the lume dot next to the 3,6,9 and 12 hour markers.
The watch comes with a flat Sapphire crystal. The top of the bezel and the top of the lugs have brushed finishing while the side of the case has polished finished. Overall finishing of the case is pretty good.
This watch is about 14mm thick. It seems like 4R57 based models are usually quite thick. I believe the 4R57 movement is thicker than the other 4R variants.
Diameter: 41mm excluding crown
Thickness: 14mm
Lug width: 20mm
Both SRP337J and SRP339J are limited to 3000 pieces each. Each variant is individually numbered in “XXXX/3000” format.
