Seiko Mechanical – SARG011

sarg011

This time round I had the opportunity to check out the Seiko SARG011, a recent 6R15 JDM model from the Mechanical line. This watch has a black dial with large Arabic numerals, legible wide hands and red-tipped second hand. Some people think of it as Seiko’s version of the Explorer 1 but I see it as something like the new Tudor Ranger because of its size and its printed hour numerals and bars

Here’s a quick look.

Dial
Even numbers of the hour are represented by Arabic numerals and odd numbers are represented by bars. The wide hands and printed hour markers make the watch very legible. The other aspects of the dial that are worth taking note are:

– red-tipped second hand
– outline of the hour, minute and second hand are darkened
– white on black date display
– date window frame is darkened
– applied Seiko logo
– lumed hour markers

Case
Looking at the stock picture alone, I thought Seiko had again used the SARX001 case. When I got hold of the actual watch, I realized this is a brand new case. It looks similar to the SARX001 case but the tip of the lugs are more squarish instead of curved. The size (diameter and lug to lug) is slightly different as well.

The watch is fitted with a curved sapphire crystal.

Strap
The watch is fitted with a black leather strap with folding buckle. It is thick padded and has a non-glossy finishing.

Personally, I wouldn’t use a folding buckle on a watch like this. The strap is nice but it would be perfect if it had a regular buckle. Fortunately, there are plenty of aftermarket straps that I think should go well with the watch.

  1. The strap looks nice and simple. Btw, can the watch bezel be repolished? my orients bezel could have accidentally knocked on some hard stuffs, and it resulted in scratch lines in every corner.

    • I know there are people who refinish expensive watches like Rolex. I’m sure the Orient bezel can be polish but now sure where and whether it’s worth the cost.

  2. Does this watch wear large? 40.3mm isn’t too enormous but the face really makes me think it’s going to dominate a wrist. Lugs look fairly short though…

  3. bought mine a couple of weeks ago, change the strap to a more vintage leather look, and its awesome. love the dial, the lume is simply gorgeous, if i was nitpicking, i would prefer the date window to be round instead of square, just the Sinn 🙂 but hey, then again its a Seiko. worth every penny…

  4. Bought mine while in Japan a couple weeks ago. Bought from Yodobashi in Akihabara. Got it because I really liked the watch, but didn’t realize it was a JDM, nor how much of a deal I was getting by purchasing it there. Now that I’m back in the States, I’m kicking myself for not looking harder at a couple other Seiko and Orient watches they had.

That said, I really like the one I got. I have big wrists, and it wears near perfect on me. Also my first automatic/mechanical. Great watch so far, and I really like the deployment clasp that came with it. Pretty sure any leather-band watches I get from here on out will need to have one.

  6. Does the dial color is identical to sarg009?
I fancy the red tip of second hands but picture of the dial make grey-ish. I wish it is black

  7. I was going back and forth between this and the Sinn 556a. I decided on the sarg and couldn’t be happier. Both are very similar but the Seiko is a bit more stylized for a better fit with a suit. Any opinions?
