This time round I had the opportunity to check out the Seiko SPB069, a limited edition Presage model with blue enamel dial. It is an international model that is limited to 1500 pieces. According to the information on Seiko’s website, this watch is inspired by night sky and Japanese culture of admiring the moon that started since ancient times.
This watch is so similar to the JDM model, SARX053 that I thought they were the same watch. However, this is not the case as you can see in the pictures below. The main differences are the hour hand, minute markers and the colour of the crescent moon on the second hand. The SPB069 is a limited edition international model while the SARX053 is regular JDM model. Both watches are the same size and probably use the same case.
Above: SARX053 (left), SPB069 (right).
The SPB069 has a dark blue enamel dial that looks purplish under certain lighting conditions. The stock picture above (watch on the right) shows the colour very accurately. It has Roman hour markers in white, matched with railway track minute indices. They are laid out around the dial and connected like a railway track.
According to Seiko’s website, the dial design of the SARX053 is inspired by its first pocket watch, the Time Keeper from 1895. I guess the same can be said for the SPB069.
The hour and minute hands are white with the hour hand having a spade at its tip. The minute hand has a similar shaped body but does not have the spade. I think this setup looks better than having two spades and it gives the watch a modern look.
The second hand is silver in colour and has a gold crescent moon at its short end. The watch has display back with a crescent moon printed on the case back crystal.
Lug width: 20mm
Lug to lug: 47mm
Water resistance: 100m
Overall, I think the SPB069 is a beautiful and well-made watch For the money you pay, you get a limited edition watch with enamel dial, curved Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and genuine crocodile strap with deployant buckle. The only thing I think can be improved upon is the movement. It would be good if Seiko put a better movement such as the 8L or 4S movement in there. I feel that the watch would be more complete if the enamel dial produced by these master craftsmen is sitting on a high end Seiko movement.
