Orient Tonneau Open Heart – CFHAA003D

CFHAA003D

This time round I had the opportunity to handle this Orient open heart watch with a tonneau shape case or beer barrel shape as some may call it.

This is an internatational model and falls somewhere between the middle and upper tier category in Orient’s product offerings. Let’s look at some of its features.

Dial
The dial of this watch is very well organized. The open heart window is located at the 9 o’clock position and the power reserve is located at the 12 o’clock position. It is angled towards the 1 o’clock marker to avoid the open heart window. The second hand sub-dial fits nicely above the 6 o’clock marker and the Orient name and logo occupies space available at the 3 o’clock position. All these are encircled by the minute markings. The sub-dials and area within the minute markings are all textured.

The Arabic numerals are sized according to the space available. For example the numeral “11” is made bigger to fill up the bigger space around it whereas the “2”, “3” and “4” numerals are smaller due to the smaller space around them.

The use of red color on the power reserve and second hands works very well with the color of the dial and makes it easier to spot these smaller hands.

Movement
The watch is powered by the 46S50 movement which is made in Japan. As you have seen in the dial description above, this movement features the open heart and sub second features.

It does not have the day and date features which means the crown can only be out pulled to one position and setting the time is very straightforward as there is no need to take AM/PM into consideration.

Case and crystal
The watch has a nicely built stainless steel case and is installed with a curved mineral crystal. Below is a side profile shot.

Here’s another view showing the curved mineral crystal.

Crown
The watch has a nice “onion shaped” crown that is quite rare to see on modern Japanese watches.

Caseback
The caseback is secured by six screws and has a round crystal that allows you to see the movement. I believe this type of caseback rather than the snap-on type provides better water resistance. The watch is water resistance to 50m.

Strap
The watch comes with a genuine leather strap with white contrasting stitches. Instead of a standard buckle, Orient has given this watch a butterfly deployant buckle as shown below.

  1. I just can’t figure out why none of Orient’s open heart watcbes have date/day function while other brands (particularly the Chinese) have it!

Seems to me that they just cut out a hole (albeit tastefully done) and then charge a premium !

    • Hi Fungus,

Very sharp observation. None of Orient’s open heart watches have day/date function indeed.

I do not know why and I can only guess it is purely for aesthetic reasons. In the watch featured in this blog post, the day/date function is omitted probably due to space constraint of the dial.

Notice that there is no day/date function in the two watches below where the open heart windows are located above and below the 9 o’clock marker respectively. Again, I can only guess it is due to aesthetic reason (keeping the dial as simple as possible).

I’m not into Chinese watches but from what I’ve seen, the balance/open heart on Chinese watches is usually located at the 6 o’clock position, making it is aesthetically okay to have a (big) date window under the 12’o’clock marker.

      Best regards,
      Thomas

  2. I like this watch a lot! It would be nice to see how big it is compared to . . . a wrist. I recently purchsed an Orient Metro and was a little overwhelmed by its size. Do you know if the CFHAA003D is larger than the Metro?

Also, what’s the model number of the round Orient in this article? It, too, is gorgeous.
