Pictorial Review: Seiko 62MAS Reissue (6R15 Version) – SPB051J

This time round, I had the opportunity to handle the 6R15 version of the 62MAS reissue. This is a local specimen and hence the model number is SPB051J. The model number in Japan is SBDC051. It was released along with the SBDX019 in 2017.

The SBDX019 is closer to the 1965 62MAS in terms of look and feel while the SOB051J is more like a modern interpretation of the vintage diver. It has the size of a modern dive watch and the dial deviates pretty far from the original 62MAS.

  • Hours markers are not the same rectangular shape as the 62MAS.
  • X logo on the dial is something Seiko started using in recent years.
  • Hands are not the same, especially the hour hand.

Below is a pictorial review with some comments and feature highlights.

In the dial shot above:

1. The tip of the hour and minute hands are squarish instead of sharp.

Below:

1. Circular brush pattern on the lugs.

In the next few pictures below:

1. Curved Sapphire crystal
2. Coin edge bezel
3. Screw in crown

In pictures below:

1. Drilled through lugs
2. No “S” or “X” signature on the crown.
3. Nice downward sloping lugs.

In the pictures below:

1. Screw on case back.
2. Tsumani logo

More pictures.

Diameter: 42.6mm excluding crown
Thickness: 13.75mm
Lug Width: 20mm

Final thoughts:

Although the SPB051J is not a very close or exact re-edition of Seiko’s first diver from 1965, it is a nice watch in its own right. I prefer this watch to the Sumo because of the following:

  • Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
  • Diashield coating.
  • Bezel insert with standard design. The numbers on the Sumo are too large.
  • Nice coin edge bezel.

  1. Nice photos Yeoman!
Seiko makes nice watch cases and this is a good example. Those polished and brush surfaces remind me of the fantastic MM300.
The hands and indices look even better in person and that dial finishing is superb too.And funnily I preferred the black over the blue version.

  2. I love the color of that nylon strap. It’s kind of a green/gray color that I have never seen before. Any idea where to get one?
