Seiko Prospex – SRPD31K1

This time round I had the opportunity to check out a Seiko Prospex that was released a while ago. This is a adventure watch with a very unique design.

The model I have here is the SRPD31K1. It is a black dial variant that comes on a light brown leather strap. The watch comes with an inner rotating compass bezel that is controlled by the crown at the 2 o’clock position. There is a crown guard over the crown that prevents unintentional movement of the bezel.

There is also a hidden or recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position for setting the day, date and time.

Below are some observations I have on the crown operation:

– When setting the time, I am able to get a good grip with my thumb and index finger since the crown is pulled all the way out and much of it is exposed.
– when setting the date, it is still possible to get a reasonably good grip even though the crown is pushed in by a notch.
– when hand winding the watch, the crown is completely pushed in and winding can only be done by the index finger alone. Fortunately, the crown is knurled to provide some friction.

The dial is matte black and the hands, hour markers and other markings are beige in colour. The hands and hour markers are lumed with the hands having brighter lume effect as they have a bigger lumed area than the hour markers.

The lugs are short and hidden under the case. The lug to lug distance (40.5mm) is actually shorter than the diameter of the case (43mm). Most parts of the case have brushed finishing except for the lugs and back of the case.

The front of the watch is fitted with a domed hardlex crystal while the display caseback is fitted with a grey-tinted glass with the international ground to air emergency signal codes printed on it.

Diameter: 43mm
Lug to lug: 40.5mm
Lug width: 22mm
Thickness: 14.4
Water resistance: 20 bar
Movement: 4R36
